“You saved my life!”

“You saved my life!”

“You saved my life!” Reggie says of Shelter KC. Having grown up amongst gangs and drugs in Southern California, Reggie’s parents sent him to Kansas City to live with relatives who were in ministry. He found temporary stability here but returned to old ways after a divorce.

“I started going into the streets again,” he remembers. “I was running amok. I’d always been reluctant to ask anybody for help. I always thought I could get myself out of this, but it wasn’t working out. It looked like instead of digging myself out of it, I was digging myself deeper in the hole.”

When Reggie got back into drugs, it led him to jail. To help straighten out the mess he was in, friends he’d known for a long time recommended Shelter KC. Reggie was hesitant to go, but the death of a close friend provided a needed wake-up call.

“You saved my life!”

“One of my closest friends and I were together one day getting high, and the next day she was on the bus, and she passed away. She rode around on the bus all day, and they didn’t know she was dead. Not until the bus driver drove back to the stall. I thought, ‘If I don’t stop, that could be me.’ It really shook me.”

Soon after arriving here and enrolling in C-COR, Reggie received confirmation that he was where he needed to be.

“I was sitting there one night taking inventory of myself. The subject of discernment had been preached in chapel, and I heard a voice saying, ‘Why are you looking at everyone else instead of your own recovery?’ The Holy Spirit told me I was at the right place. I just grabbed hold of it.”

“Shelter KC is a place where my life has been restored,” he says. “I’ve gotten back into the Word of God because of these wonderful classes. They really go deep into the Bible. I have learned so much about family. I’ve learned more about temptation and how to avoid it. This has really helped me get stronger in my sobriety.”

Reggie has experienced healing in other areas of his life as well.

“My family had given up on me – now they are being restored. My daughter and I are tighter than two peas. I’ve got more support now than I ever had. I thought I could do this alone. Now I know that I need other people. This place is a blessing. I had no idea until some friends walked me up that ramp.”

And to friends like you who support Shelter KC, Reggie says: “Thank you very much. I was on a fast downward spiral. I might not be alive if I hadn’t walked into Shelter KC. You saved my life!”
