Four Phases of the Recovery Program

Recovery Program Overview

Shelter KC's recovery program consists of four structured phases, each tailored to the individual needs of participants. Men must apply and be accepted into the program, after which they actively and faithfully engage in their personalized recovery plan.

Program Phases

Phase 1: Preparation (13 weeks)
The preparation phase equips men for the deep work of recovery by addressing immediate needs and laying a strong foundation. Key components include:

  • Life skills and addiction recovery classes.
  • Completing Bible study, Scripture memorization, and response papers.
  • Finding a church home, sponsor (for addiction recovery), and mentor (for spiritual and life support).
  • Passing a drug and alcohol test halfway through and at the end of the phase.

Upon meeting these requirements, participants advance to the Discipleship 1 phase.

Phase 2: Discipleship 1 (26–52 weeks)
This phase focuses on addressing core issues that lead to destructive behaviors while reinforcing long-term recovery. Key components include:

  • Customizing a recovery plan with a Recovery Specialist.
  • Beginning the Genesis Process addiction recovery curriculum.
  • Classes on discipleship, shame, sexual purity, healthy relationships, employment preparation, fatherhood, and addiction recovery.
  • Continued Scripture memorization and drug/alcohol testing.

Phase 3: Discipleship 2 (13 weeks)
This phase prepares men for increased independence while maintaining a recovery framework. Participants:

  • Develop a plan for work, education, or independent housing.
  • Continue regular drug and alcohol testing.

Phase 4: Transition (up to 1 year)
The transition phase supports men in establishing stability outside the program. Key goals include:

  • Completing vocational or trade school (if applicable).
  • Securing employment or a steady income.
  • Creating and maintaining a balanced budget.
  • Finding suitable housing.
