"My parents divorced when I was three,” Nichole remembers. “So, my sister and younger brother and I grew up with a single dad, which was uncommon then. We didn't go to church, but a neighbor did a little Bible study for kids in the neighborhood. I asked God into my heart when I was a kid."

Nichole graduated from high school, worked at several jobs, and then met the man who eventually introduced her to drugs.

"I struggled with a meth addiction for five years," she says. "I became homeless, and I kind of gave up on myself." In her desperation, she committed a felony and was jailed for six months.

"I had a spiritual experience when I was in jail. I was in solitary confinement, and I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and what I wanted moving forward. was mostly affirmation from God after I had felt so low. I talked with him every day, and I really feel like my time in jail was his way of protecting me."

Nichole learned about Shelter KC and our Women's Center through a case manager. Thanks to your support, she found hope and healing here, along with the chance to start over.

"The staff really encourages us," Nichole says. "I didn't have much contact with my kids when I was incarcerated, but I've been able to rebuild those relationships. It's huge for me that they've given me a second chance in their lives. Just seeing other women who have shared experiences about the loss of their families has encouraged me to have more hope."

"I definitely want to say, 'Thank you' to the people who make Shelter KC possible. I get to experience fun without being addicted to drugs. I've gotten to experience sisterhood."

"Without the help here, I don't know where I would have gone."
